Moringa’s Shadow: How One Lot Sparked a Nationwide Supplement Recall

In the hush of wellness aisles and the quiet clink of supplement jars, a sudden alarm has sounded. What many saw as a benign, health-boosting green powder has turned into a conduit for a serious bacterial threat. The outbreak of Salmonella Richmond, traced back to moringa leaf powder, has upended the trust in some popular dietary supplements.

Investigators with the CDC and FDA report that at least eleven people across seven states—including Florida, Michigan, and New York—have fallen ill. Three of those hospitalized, according to health officials. The symptoms—diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps—are all too typical of a salmonella infection, yet what’s unusual here is the source: powdered greens.

At the heart of the recall is a single lot of moringa leaf powder, imported from Vallon Farm Direct in Jodhpur, India. That lot, according to FDA tracebacks, was used to produce a number of affected products, including Food To Live’s Organic Moringa Leaf Powder and its SuperGreens Mix. Also implicated: the Member’s Mark Super Greens dietary supplement sold at Sam’s Club—regardless of lot or expiration date.

The convenience of online shopping meant the contaminated powders weren’t just in big-box stores—they reached consumers through Amazon, Walmart, Target, and even eBay. That wide distribution has made the recall particularly urgent: retailers and consumers are being urged to stop using, selling, or serving these products immediately.

In response, Food To Live voluntarily recalled multiple sizes and lots of its moringa-based powders. The FDA is advising anyone who bought the recalled products to throw them away or return them—and to thoroughly clean surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the powder.

Public health officials say the outbreak underscores how even “natural” or plant-based supplements are not immune to contamination. While moringa is often praised for its nutritional benefits, the bacteria hitching a ride in this batch poses a serious risk, especially for the young, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
