More Hantavirus Cases Are Expected, WHO Chief Says

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, announced that health officials expect additional hantavirus cases to emerge in the wake of a recent outbreak tied to the MV Hondius cruise ship. This development follows the confirmation of eight cases (six confirmed, two suspected), with three fatalities linked to the Andes virus, a strain associated with human-to-human transmission.

Investigations into the outbreak revealed that the cruise ship's passengers had previously visited multiple locations in South America, potentially exposing them to infected rodents, a common vector for hantavirus. The WHO is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with member states to enhance public health measures, including contact tracing and timely case management.

While the expert community is responding proactively to isolate and manage cases, the WHO has acknowledged that the unique conditions aboard the ship, such as close quarters and shared spaces, heighten the risk of transmission. The organization assessed that although the current public health risk remains low, preparedness measures must be intensified to mitigate further spread.
