“Money, Mirrors, and a Missing Woman — The Banc of California Fraud Uncovered”

She slipped through the ledger like a ghost in the margins — names on paper, numbers shifting in the night, trust twisted into loss. For nearly a decade, the story of a large bank-fraud against Banc of California has held a hole in its center, and the missing piece remains in flight. A 73-year-old woman, charged years ago with swindling nearly $15 million, is still on the run.

Federal officials say the scheme began in July 2017 and ran through May 2018 across Orange and Los Angeles counties. Allegedly, the woman — Mary Carole McDonnell — used false claims of lineage and wealth to persuade the bank she had access to a secret $80 million trust tied to a storied aircraft-manufacturing family. That claim gained her loans, credit, and financial leverage — funds she was never entitled to.

By December 2018, prosecutors had enough to secure an arrest warrant on counts of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. But McDonnell never appeared in court. She remains sought by the FBI. Officials believe she may have fled to Dubai, though she retains ties to Los Angeles and Montgomery, Alabama.

The fraud allegedly did not end with Banc of California. Investigators suspect she carried out similar schemes against other financial institutions, inflating the total loss to over $15 million. The full scope — how many banks, how many victims — remains hazy, shrouded behind pseudonyms and shell companies.

What stands out is the method: not a Hollywood-style robbery, but a quiet, persistent deception buried in paperwork, false identity, and shady promises. The bank’s books were balanced, but the truth was empty. For customers, shareholders, and employees, it was a betrayal that took years to uncover — and still may not have a final chapter.

Now, as the FBI issues public notices requesting help to locate McDonnell, her case is a reminder that financial fraud often travels in whispers — not gunfire. The ledger may look clean; what lies beneath can be rotten.

She is described as approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, around 145 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. A scar on her right knee helps mark her identity.

For the bank, the regulators, and the public, the question remains: can justice catch up with someone who vanished between lines of credit sheets and trust-fund illusions? Until she’s found, the silence echoes louder than any shuttered door.
