Amsterdam, Netherlands— A young man was stabbed to death just outside a nightclub on Rembrandtplein in central Amsterdam around 3:20 a.m. on October 18.
The victim, identified by police as a 22-year-old from Almere, had just left the club with friends. An argument broke out near the entrance queue. Witnesses said it escalated in seconds. A knife was produced.
Bouncers pulled the attacker away but not before the victim collapsed on the pavement. Club staff called emergency services. Police arrived to find a large crowd and a man bleeding heavily. Paramedics could not save him. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:48 a.m.
"We are looking at CCTV from the club and surrounding bars," an Amsterdam Police spokesperson said. "There were many witnesses. We have spoken to several but need more."
The suspect, described as a man in his early 20s wearing a dark hooded jacket, fled on foot toward Thorbeckeplein. A police helicopter circled for an hour. K9 units searched alleys. No arrest had been made by Saturday afternoon.
Rembrandtplein was sealed off for forensic work. Blood marked the sidewalk near the club door. Officers placed evidence markers and collected bottles and clothing. The club closed for the night and posted a statement saying it was cooperating fully.
Violence around Amsterdam nightlife has drawn growing concern from city officials. The mayor's office has pushed for more camera coverage and earlier closing times in the square after a string of assaults this year. Club owners say they hire extra security but cannot control the street.
Friends of the victim left flowers at the cordon. A small crowd gathered, quiet. Police asked anyone with phone footage to come forward.
The investigation remains open. Detectives plan to review additional camera angles and interview door staff throughout the weekend.
