Miracle in Kwara: 6 Rescued Alive—Including 2 Children—After Three-Storey Building Collapses

KWARA, NIGERIA — Emergency rescue teams successfully pulled six trapped individuals—including two young children—alive from the rubble following the catastrophic collapse of a three-storey residential building in Kwara State.

First responders, supported by local residents, rushed to the site immediately after the structure collapsed with a deafening crash, trapping occupants beneath piles of concrete debris and twisted metal.

Working through narrow gaps in the wreckage, search teams located two children trapped beneath structural slabs, carefully excavating the immediate area to pull them out safely. Four adults were subsequently reached and extracted by rescue personnel using heavy lifting equipment and manual tools during an intensive, multi-hour operation.

All six survivors sustained varying degrees of injury from the collapse and were immediately attended to by medical personnel waiting at the perimeter.

On-site medical teams administered immediate first aid to stabilize the victims before transporting them to nearby emergency medical facilities for treatment. Healthcare workers later confirmed that while the survivors suffered physical trauma and minor fractures, all six remain in stable condition. Local authorities sealed off the collapse site to clear remaining hazardous structural elements and prevent secondary collapses in adjacent buildings.

State emergency management officials and engineering experts have launched an investigation into the cause of the disaster, focusing on structural integrity, building materials, and adherence to construction codes.

Eye-witnesses reported hearing loud cracking sounds coming from the building's support columns moments before the entire structure gave way, giving some occupants mere seconds to attempt an escape. Local community members immediately formed human chains alongside emergency responders to clear loose blocks and debris, working feverishly with their bare hands until heavy earth-moving machinery could navigate the narrow access roads leading to the scene.

State development authorities have since announced a comprehensive audit of surrounding multi-storey structures in the commercial district to identify potential structural defects and enforce strict compliance with local building codes. Public advocacy groups and residents have called for rigorous prosecution of contractors found guilty of using substandard materials or ignoring safety protocols, warning that unregulated construction practices continue to pose a threat to public safety across the region.
