NEWPORT, Ore. — A massive structural fire and suspected anhydrous ammonia leak at the Pacific Seafood processing plant threw Newport’s iconic Bayfront into chaos on Sunday, October 25, 2026 triggering emergency evacuations, widespread business closures, and a multi-agency hazardous materials response.
Emergency crews responded to the initial alarm at the facility on S.E. Bay Boulevard after thick, acrid smoke began pouring from the building, visible across the bay and enveloping nearby residential hillsides. The blaze quickly escalated, leading to a partial roof collapse and threatening two large industrial tanks containing anhydrous ammonia—a chemical commonly used in commercial refrigeration systems to freeze seafood and make ice.
Because exposure to concentrated ammonia vapor presents a severe respiratory hazard, local authorities immediately established a one-mile recommended evacuation zone surrounding the processing plant.
An emergency shelter was established in the gymnasium at Sam Case Elementary School to house displaced residents. Nearby institutions, including the Hatfield Marine Science Center and local businesses along U.S. Highway 101, closed their doors for the day as heavy smoke drifted northeast. While Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital sat near the edge of the evacuation zone, health officials confirmed that a hospital evacuation was not required due to prevailing wind conditions and low chemical risk at that location.
"We'd rather be home, but ammonia is no joke," said Dave Eckleman, one of dozens of local residents forced to leave their homes as crews tackled the plume.
The Oregon State Fire Marshal deployed a specialized regional hazardous materials team to support dozens of firefighters from departments across Lincoln County. Emergency personnel blocked entrances to the historic Bayfront while crews poured streams of water into the facility to suppress the flames and cool chemical containers.
By Sunday evening, emergency crews had successfully mitigated the immediate chemical threat, allowing hazardous materials units to clear the scene.
While the primary blaze was brought under control, relief crews remained on the scene overnight to extinguish stubborn hot spots inside the damaged structure. An investigation into the origin of the fire and the initial sequence of events remains ongoing.
