Massive Explosion Hits Port of Sochi as Drone Strike Triggers Fires in Southern Russia

SOCHI, Russia — A massive explosion rocked the strategic Black Sea port of Sochi on Thursday morning, September 3, 2026 after an unmanned surface vessel operated by Ukrainian forces executed a long-range strike on a Russian-flagged multipurpose support vessel.

The attack sent shockwaves through the resort city and ignited large fires across the harbor area, marking one of the deepest naval drone strikes into Russian territory since the conflict began.

According to statements from the Ukrainian Navy, an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) successfully breached coastal defenses surrounding the Sochi harbor shortly after 6:00 a.m. local time. The kamikaze drone targeted the Nefrit, a specialized multipurpose support ship used for offshore oil and gas operations, cargo transport, and underwater engineering work.

Eyewitness footage posted on social media showed the drone detonating alongside the hull in a massive fireball, sending thick plumes of black smoke towering over the resort city’s coastline. Ukraine’s military command stated that the vessel was targeted because its infrastructure operations directly supported Russia's war economy.

Sochi Mayor Andrey Proshunin declared a citywide emergency threat as defense forces engaged additional incoming aerial and sea-based drones. The incident triggered localized fires within the harbor zone, while separate strikes across the broader region targeted energy facilities, including an oil depot in nearby Adler.

Emergency response teams rushed to the waterfront to contain the blazes and prevent fires from spreading to adjacent commercial docks. Local authorities temporarily suspended operations at Sochi International Airport and issued precautionary shelter-in-place warnings before declaring the area secure roughly thirty minutes later.

The strike on Sochi—located more than 400 miles from Ukrainian-controlled territory—demonstrates the expanding operational reach of Kyiv’s long-range unscrewed fleet. Russian security forces have launched a forensic investigation into the harbor breach, while military units in Krasnodar Krai remain under heightened alert following the sequence of coordinated drone incursions.
