MOSCOW, Russia — A massive overnight aerial bombardment involving 650 drones targeted Moscow and its surrounding region, killing a 20-year-old man and injuring six others, according to Russian authorities on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Russian state news agency TASS described the barrage as one of the largest long-range drone assaults against the Russian capital in the past two years.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and regional officials reported that air defense systems were engaged through the night from Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Air defense units intercepted 105 drone on their direct approach to the city, while hundreds more were shot down at long range across the surrounding region.
Despite the air defense interceptions, falling debris and direct impacts caused significant damage to civilian and energy infrastructure across the Moscow region.
Moscow Oblast Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that more than ten private homes were damaged in surrounding settlements, including Istra, Lobanovo, and Radumlya. A 20-year-old man was killed when debris struck a home on the capital's outskirts, and six additional residents were hospitalized with varying injuries.
Emergency crews worked through early Tuesday morning to extinguish localized fires, clear structural rubble, and secure damaged electrical lines across affected municipalities.
The massive wave of unmanned aerial vehicles prompted immediate emergency measures across the capital’s transport hubs. Rosaviatsia, Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, briefly suspended operations and implemented flight restrictions across major hubs—including Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Sheremetyevo—before restoring normal operations around 5:00 a.m.
Local reports indicated that primary targets included major energy and oil storage hubs that supply fuel across the metropolitan region and to local airports. A major oil depot in the region was reported in flames following the attack, with firefighters deployed to contain the blaze.
The strike comes amid a sharp intensification of long-range aerial attacks between Ukrainian and Russian forces targeting strategic infrastructure, military posts, and logistical networks. Ukrainian officials have vowed to expand strikes on energy and fuel distribution facilities in response to Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian power grids and civilian infrastructure heading into autumn.
Russian defense officials confirmed that military investigations are underway to evaluate the wreckage of the downed drones and determine the launch sites of the overnight assault.
