Massive Arms Depot Explosion in Syria's Idlib Kills at Least 14

SARMADA, Syria — A massive explosion at a temporary depot for weapons and remnants of war near the city of Sarmada in northern Idlib province killed at least 14 people and injured 11 others on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, state media and health officials reported. Emergency teams continue to pull victims from the rubble as secondary detonations complicate response efforts.

The blast occurred in the village of Burj Elnumra, located near the major commercial hub of Sarmada in northern Idlib. The facility was being utilized as a temporary holding site for weapons, unexploded ordnance, and war remnants scheduled for transport elsewhere. According to the Syrian Defense Ministry, several military personnel were among those injured in the blast.

The initial explosion sent shockwaves across the surrounding countryside and triggered localized fires. Civil Defense and firefighting crews rushed to the scene, but ongoing secondary detonations hampered containment efforts and trapped responders, causing thick columns of black smoke to billow over the area for hours.

The Idlib Health Directorate confirmed that at least 14 fatalities have been verified in preliminary counts. Search and rescue personnel continue working through the debris in an effort to locate individuals who remain missing beneath collapsed structures.

In response to the hazard posed by unexploded ordnance and continuing fires, internal security forces set up emergency cordons and closed all primary roads leading into the area to safeguard nearby civilians. Local hospitals remain on high alert as casualties arrive with varying degrees of burn and blast injuries.

Authorities have not yet released an official determination regarding what ignited the initial explosion. The tragedy marks the second high-profile ammunition explosion in Idlib within a single week, following a September 1 vehicle explosion in nearby Binnish that left five people dead.

A formal investigation involving Defense Ministry specialists and local authorities is underway to assess whether the blast was caused by accidental detonation, improper storage conditions, or external interference.
