MINNA, Nigeria — Terror and anguish have gripped a community in Central Nigeria’s Niger State after heavily armed gunmen launched a violent raid, kidnapping approximately a dozen children before fleeing into nearby forests.
The attack occurred during the early hours of the morning, targeting a vulnerable village in an area that has faced escalating security threats from armed criminal gangs and bandit groups operating across the region.
According to local community leaders and eye-witnesses, the assailants arrived on motorcycles, firing weapons indiscriminately into the air to instill panic and prevent residents from intervening. The gunmen moved swiftly through the village, breaking into residential homes and forcibly rounding up young children.
Parents and community members describe moments of absolute terror as they tried desperately to shield their families, only to be overwhelmed by the heavily armed attackers. Within minutes, the group seized around 12 children and vanished back into the dense bushland.
"They came without warning and swept through the village," said a local community leader who requested anonymity due to safety concerns. "We are in complete heartbreak. Our children are innocent, and we are begging authorities to bring them home safely."
Local security forces, alongside community vigilante groups, have initiated search-and-rescue operations across the surrounding terrain. Joint tactical teams are currently scanning potential hideouts and tracking the movement of the abductors deeper into the forest belt separating Niger State from neighboring regions.
State authorities have condemned the abduction, labeling it an act of extreme cowardice. Government representatives assured the affected families that all available security assets are being deployed to secure the immediate and safe release of the kidnapped children.
Niger State has increasingly become a flashpoint for widespread security challenges, where organized criminal groups routinely carry out mass abductions, extortion, and raids on rural farming communities. The targeted kidnapping of children highlights a dangerous pattern of attacks aimed at terrorizing local populations and demanding ransom. As fear spreads across neighboring villages, residents are calling on federal and state governments to establish permanent security outposts to safeguard vulnerable communities and restore peace to the region.
