President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to conduct a comprehensive inspection of all dredging vessels operating in Manila Bay, amid concerns over environmental damage, navigational safety, and compliance with maritime regulations.
The directive tasks the PCG with verifying permits, vessel seaworthiness, crew qualifications, and adherence to environmental safeguards, particularly rules governing dredging depth, disposal of materials, and protected marine areas. Authorities are also checking for possible violations involving unauthorized operations and improper waste dumping.
Malacañang said the inspections aim to ensure that dredging activities support legitimate infrastructure and flood-control projects without compromising coastal ecosystems or public safety. The government has emphasized that Manila Bay’s rehabilitation remains a priority, with strict enforcement against activities that could undermine restoration efforts.
The PCG will coordinate with relevant agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Maritime Industry Authority, to recommend sanctions or suspension of operations for violators. Results of the inspections are expected to guide further policy actions on dredging and coastal management in the bay.
