Man Fatally Shot by Deputy Following Domestic Violence Call

SPRINGFIELD — A domestic dispute turned fatal late Tuesday night after a sheriff's deputy shot and killed an armed man who allegedly threatened officers responding to a residential call.

Deputies were dispatched to a home on the 400 block of Elm Street following a frantic 911 call reporting a violent domestic altercation between a couple inside the residence.

Upon arrival, deputies reported hearing shouting and the sound of breaking glass from inside the house. According to preliminary statements from the sheriff's office, officers announced their presence and entered the dwelling, where they encountered a male suspect in his late 30s.

Authorities state the man was armed with a firearm and refused multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon. As the confrontation escalated, the suspect reportedly raised the handgun toward the responding deputies, prompting one officer to fire their service weapon, striking the man in the chest.

Emergency medical service (EMS) personnel already staged nearby were called to the scene immediately, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A woman present inside the home was rescued by officers and treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the initial domestic dispute. No deputies were injured in the incident.
