Major Ore Bust: P2.1M Illegal Minerals Intercepted in Lanao del Norte; 3 Arrested

LANAO DEL NORTE, Philippines — Police authorities in Northern Mindanao intercepted an unauthorized shipment of mineral ores estimated to be worth ₱2.1 million on Monday evening, August 24, 2026 during a targeted security checkpoint operation along a primary highway corridor in Lanao del Norte, resulting in the arrest of three suspects.

According to preliminary reports from local law enforcement and field units, officers flagged down the transport vehicle for routine inspection and documentation checks. Upon inspecting the cargo compartment, officers uncovered hundreds of sacks filled with suspected mineral ores. When requested by authorities, the driver and two crew members failed to present valid ore transport permits, certificates of registration, or legal clearance from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB).

The three individuals were immediately taken into custody and brought to the local police station for documentation and processing. Police confirmed that the suspects will face formal charges for violating Republic Act 7942, also known as the Philippine Mining Act of 1995, which penalizes the illegal transport, possession, and extraction of mineral resources.

The vehicle and its illicit cargo remain impounded under police custody pending comprehensive megascopic analysis by environment officials to verify the exact composition and origin of the minerals. Regional police officials emphasized that security personnel will continue to tighten highway checkpoints and collaborate closely with environmental regulators to curb illegal mining activities and prevent the unlawful exploitation of natural resources across the region.

Environmental watchdogs and regional officials noted that illegal extraction operations not only deprive the government of crucial tax revenue, but also inflict severe ecological damage on forest cover, soil stability, and local watersheds. Transporting unprocessed minerals without proper environmental impact assessments poses significant risks to communities downstream, where uncontrolled quarrying often triggers landslides and flash flooding during heavy monsoon rains.

In response to the interception, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has launched a parallel investigation to trace the origin of the seized ores and identify potential illegal mining sites operating within the province. Regional law enforcement agencies reiterated their commitment to intensifying intelligence-driven operations, warning local transport operators that participating in the unauthorized movement of natural resources will result in severe legal penalties, vehicle forfeiture, and prosecution.
