M4 Durban Horror: Multiple Vehicles Collide as Car Bursts into Flames

DURBAN, South Africa — Traffic came to a dramatic standstill on Tuesday after a horrific multi-vehicle collision caused a car to burst into flames along the M4 highway in Durban. Emergency services and local fire crews rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze, treat the injured, and secure the busy thoroughfare.

The severe crash involved multiple light motor vehicles traveling along the M4 route. According to initial reports from first responders, one of the primary vehicles involved caught fire immediately after impact, rapidly becoming engulfed in heavy smoke and flames.

Bystanders and passing motorists described a scene of utter chaos as flame and dark plumes of smoke billowed into the air, forcing incoming traffic to grind to a sudden halt.

The Durban Fire Department dispatched firefighting units to quickly suppress the intense car fire before it could ignite neighboring wreckage, while advanced life support paramedics and emergency teams assessed multiple occupants at the scene, providing immediate medical stabilization before transporting injured individuals to local medical centers. Additionally, Metro Police cordoned off affected lanes along the M4 to allow rescue crews unhindered access and prevent further accidents.

The dramatic incident led to extensive traffic tailbacks along the major arterial corridor, with authorities urging motorists to seek alternative routes while recovery teams work to clear the burned wreckage and debris.

Law enforcement officers and traffic authorities have launched a full investigation into the precise sequence of events leading up to the pileup, including speed, weather conditions, and potential mechanical failures.

"Emergency teams responded immediately to the multi-vehicle crash and resulting fire on the M4. Our priority remains assessing all patients and safely clearing the scene," noted an emergency services representative.

Municipal infrastructure crews arrived shortly after to evaluate the road surface for heat damage caused by the intense flames, as high-temperature vehicle fires can compromise asphalt integrity. Local transport officials confirmed that once the wreckage is cleared and any necessary emergency road repairs are completed, lanes will be gradually reopened to relieve the surrounding commuter traffic.
