France’s nationwide protests against inflation and rising living costs drew hundreds of thousands of demonstrators on Saturday, while police reported hundreds of arrests. Marches were largely peaceful, but violence broke out in Paris and other cities. Protesters set fires, looted dozens of shops and clashed with police, who used tear gas and water cannon. In Lyon, a tourist office was set ablaze; in Marseille and Lille, protesters broke into town halls and vandalised them. Authorities reported 400 arrests in total.
