Liechtenstein Moves to Change Succession Rules So Women Can Inherit the Throne

Liechtenstein has changed its royal succession rules so a woman could inherit the principality’s throne. Hereditary Prince Alois announced that the house law will move from male primogeniture to absolute primogeniture, meaning the first-born child inherits regardless of gender. The update applies only to future descendants of Alois and his wife, Hereditary Princess Sophie, and does not alter the current line for now. Prince Hans-Adam II remains head of state, with Alois handling most duties since 2004.
