Libya Rejects Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Foreign Minister Tells Somali Counterpart

TRIPOLI, Libya — Libya’s Foreign Minister has formally conveyed to his Somali counterpart Libya’s strong rejection of Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland, reaffirming Tripoli’s full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement issued by the Libyan Foreign Ministry, the minister stressed that any move to recognize Somaliland as an independent entity constitutes a violation of international law and runs counter to United Nations resolutions and African Union principles that uphold Somalia as a single, unified state.

During the exchange with Somalia’s foreign minister, Libya emphasized that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and that unilateral recognition efforts risk undermining regional stability in the Horn of Africa.

“Libya stands firmly with the Somali people and government in defending their sovereignty and territorial unity,” the statement said, warning that external actions that disregard established international frameworks could fuel political tensions and insecurity in the region.

The Libyan side also reiterated its commitment to African-led solutions, stressing the importance of coordination among African states in addressing sensitive political and security issues. Libya called on the international community to respect Africa’s collective positions and avoid actions that could deepen divisions.

Somali officials welcomed Libya’s position, describing it as a reaffirmation of longstanding diplomatic ties and mutual support between the two countries.

The exchange comes amid broader regional debate following reports of Israel’s move regarding Somaliland, a self-declared autonomous region that has sought international recognition despite Somalia’s continued claims of sovereignty over the territory.

Libya concluded by reaffirming its support for Somalia’s unity, stability, and peace, and pledged to continue diplomatic coordination with Mogadishu in regional and international forums.
