Landslide Disaster, Hirao: Emergency Crews Search for Man Missing After House Destroyed by Debris

Hirao, Japan—Rescue workers are sifting through tons of mud and broken timber in Hirao today. A landslide struck a residential area early this morning. The slide buried a single-family home while the occupants were inside.

Police received a distress call at 6:15 AM from a neighbor who heard a loud crash. Heavy rain had been pounding the region for twelve hours straight. Soil saturation reached critical levels on the hillside overlooking the town.

First responders found the house completely moved from its foundation. Massive amounts of earth and debris pushed the structure down the slope. One woman managed to crawl free from the wreckage. She was treated for minor injuries and shock at a nearby hospital.

The woman informed authorities that her husband was still trapped inside the building when the collapse occurred. Search teams arrived shortly after but were hampered by continuing downpours. The unstable ground poses a threat to workers in the area.

Heavy equipment is currently being brought in to stabilize the slope. Firefighters and local police are working in shifts to remove debris by hand where machinery cannot reach. The search effort is expected to continue through the night.

Local officials have ordered immediate evacuations for nearby homes. They fear the saturated hillside may shift again without warning. Residents are being moved to a community shelter in the town center.

The meteorological agency has warned that more rain is moving toward the region. This makes the terrain increasingly dangerous for those on the ground. A drone unit is being deployed to assess the structural integrity of the slope above.

Commanders at the site say they are operating under the assumption that the man is still trapped in the basement area. They have not yet confirmed any contact with the missing individual. The operation remains at a total standstill as engineers monitor for movement in the earth.
