Kyiv, Ukraine— A commercial transport truck collided with a passenger bus on Kyiv highway on October 31, 2026, killing four people and shutting down a major route out of the capital.
The crash happened at 7:15 a.m. on the E40 highway near Brovary, just east of Kyiv. The highway was wet from overnight rain. Police said the truck, loaded with construction material, drifted into the opposite lane. It hit the front of a passenger bus carrying workers to Kyiv. The impact was head-on.
Four fatalities were confirmed by 10 a.m. Three were on the bus, including the driver. One was the truck driver, who was trapped in his cab. Ten other passengers were injured, three seriously. They were cut from the wreckage with hydraulic tools. One woman was conscious and talking while rescuers worked.
The bus was torn open. Its front was crushed back to the second row. The truck’s load spilled across both lanes, concrete blocks and rebar scattered over 100 meters. Fuel leaked. Firefighters sprayed foam to prevent fire. Traffic was stopped in both directions.
Patrol police said speed and fatigue were possible factors. The truck had left Chernihiv at 3 a.m. Its tachograph was recovered. The bus was on a scheduled route from Pryluky to Kyiv. It was licensed and had passed inspection last month. Witnesses said the truck swerved suddenly, as if the driver fell asleep.
The E40 is one of Ukraine’s busiest highways and has seen several deadly crashes this year. It has two lanes each way but no central barrier on this stretch. Locals have asked for a barrier for years. The road service said installation was planned for next spring.
Families gathered at the Brovary hospital, waiting for names. The hospital said it had called in extra surgeons. Blood was needed. A queue formed in the hallway. One survivor said the bus was quiet, people half asleep, then a bang and darkness.
Investigators opened a criminal case for violation of traffic rules causing death. They seized dashcam footage from cars behind the bus. They said autopsies would be conducted to check for alcohol or medical issues.
By afternoon, the wreckage was cleared but the highway remained closed for forensic examination. Traffic was diverted through back roads. The death toll stood at four.
