Two Drivers Dead After Multi Car Collision On Highway 401, Snowstorm Blinds Drivers, Rescue Teams Struggle Through Whiteout

Toronto, Canada— A multi-car collision on Highway 401 left two drivers dead on October 31, 2026, as a snowstorm cut visibility and turned Canada’s busiest highway into a wreckage field.

The pileup happened at 7:10 a.m. near Bowmanville, east of Toronto, on the westbound lanes. Snow had fallen overnight, 15 centimeters in three hours, with wind gusts of 50 kilometers per hour. The highway was slick. Plows had not yet cleared the fast lane. Drivers were doing 100 km/h despite conditions.

Ontario Provincial Police said two drivers were killed. One was a 34-year-old woman whose car was crushed between two transport trucks. The other was a 58-year-old man whose pickup spun and was hit from behind. Both died at the scene. Five others were injured, one seriously.

More than 20 vehicles were involved, including four transport trucks. One truck jackknifed and blocked all three westbound lanes. Another truck carrying lumber spilled its load across the highway. Cars were piled on top of each other. One car ended up on its roof in the median.

The highway was closed for seven hours. Westbound traffic was diverted to Highway 2, which jammed immediately. Eastbound lanes were slowed because drivers were looking. Tow trucks struggled to reach the scene because snow made shoulders impassable. Salt trucks were called but got stuck.

Drivers described whiteout conditions. One truck driver said he could not see brake lights until 10 meters ahead. He hit his brakes and slid. Another said he saw a car spin, then everything stopped. He got out and helped pull a child from a back seat.

Environment Canada had issued a snowfall warning at 4 a.m. It said 20 centimeters were expected. The Ministry of Transportation said it had 12 plows out on Highway 401 overnight, but snowfall rate beat them. It said speed enforcement was difficult because police were also stuck.

Highway 401 is Canada’s main corridor, carrying 400,000 vehicles a day near Toronto. Crashes in snow are common in October when drivers still have summer tires. Ontario does not mandate winter tires. A coroner’s report last year recommended it after a similar pileup killed three.

By afternoon, the highway reopened one lane. Wrecked vehicles were still being lifted onto flatbeds. The two dead were identified but names were withheld. The five injured were in Durham region hospitals. Snow was still falling.
