Kurds Continue to Be Under Fire Even Amid Ceasefire, Fear New Deal May Not Stop Iranian Attacks

As of May 24, 2026, Kurdish populations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq continue to face severe threats from Iranian forces, even amidst a purported ceasefire. Since the onset of the conflict on February 28, more than 810 attacks on Kurdish targets have been recorded, raising alarms within the Kurdish community.

Recent reports indicate that Iranian drone strikes targeted bases belonging to Kurdish armed groups in Erbil province, including the Komala Party and the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK). On May 24, at least four attack drones struck these sites, although no casualties were reported. However, this follows a troubling trend of assaults where Iranian forces have launched 79 attacks utilizing missiles and drones since the start of the conflict.

Kurdish officials express deep concern that ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations may overlook the plight of Kurdish factions. While discussions of a possible deal between the U.S. and Iran circulate, there is skepticism regarding its impact on reducing Iranian military actions against Kurdish groups. Analysts note that the ceasefire has not translated into an end to hostilities, with attacks continuing almost daily.

The situation is particularly precarious as there are several prominent Kurdish Iranian opposition groups, including the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan and various factions of Komala, which share a united front against Iranian oppression. Nonetheless, the unity among these groups remains fragile, compounded by historical rivalries and differing political agendas.

While Kurdish leaders push for international support, particularly from the U.S., they are worried that any emerging agreements might not safeguard Kurdish interests or ensure their security against Iranian incursions. Given the increase in attacks and the strained political atmosphere, the Kurdish region is on high alert as it grapples with ongoing threats in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
