Kuki Village Under Fire: Khoikai Set Ablaze in Kamjong District

KAMJONG DISTRICT — Tensions in the volatile hill areas of Manipur have erupted once again after the settlement of Khoikai, a Kuki-Zo village in Kamjong district, became the latest victim of targeted violence and arson. What was once a tranquil rural community now lies in charred ruin as a midnight attack forced dozens of terrified families to abandon their ancestral homes and flee into nearby forests and security camps.

According to local accounts and security officials, unidentified armed miscreants descended upon Khoikai village under the cover of darkness. Within hours, multiple residential structures were systematically torched, sending towering plumes of smoke and fire across the hill district.

Panic spread rapidly through the village as gunshots echoed alongside the roar of burning timber. Deprived of immediate shelter, entire families—including children, women, and the elderly—were forced to flee into the surrounding jungle under terrifying conditions before taking refuge at a nearby Assam Rifles post.

"Everything happened so fast. We woke up to screams and the sound of crackling fires. By the time we ran into the hills, our homes were already consumed by flames," said a displaced resident who managed to escape with only the clothes on their back.

In response to the sudden surge of violence, joint security columns comprising the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), and local police forces were rushed to the area to prevent further escalation. Authorities have blanketed the district with heightened patrols and prohibitory measures to stabilize the region.

The incident in Khoikai comes amid a perilous spike in inter-community friction across Manipur’s border districts. Civil society organizations representing the Kuki community have strongly condemned the arson attack, calling it a deliberate act of ethnic aggression and demanding immediate government intervention alongside swift legal action against the perpetrators.

While security forces have temporarily stabilized the immediate perimeter around the village, the human cost remains severe. Dozens of displaced residents are now left without permanent shelter, relying entirely on emergency relief supplies provided by local community groups and military outposts. The destruction has claimed vital livelihoods, essential personal documents, stored grain, and cherished family heirlooms, leaving families with practically nothing. Meanwhile, an atmosphere of anxiety grips the region, with nearby settlements remaining on high alert as fearful residents brace for potential retaliatory attacks or further night raids.

As smoke continues to hover over Khoikai, the incident highlights the fragility of peace in Manipur's hill districts. With hundreds now displaced and winter approaching, local leaders urge both state and central governments to establish permanent security measures to protect vulnerable rural communities before further destruction occurs.
