Kenya Highway Carnage: Passenger Bus Collides With Freight Truck, 11 Dead, 22 Injured

Nakuru, Kenya— A passenger bus collided with a freight truck on a highway in rural Kenya on October 20, killing 11 people and injuring 22 others in a crash that blocked one of the country's busiest corridors.

The crash happened at around 5 a.m. on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Molo. The bus, carrying more than 30 passengers from Kisumu to Nairobi, was overtaking on a sharp bend. It met a freight truck carrying cement coming the other way. The two vehicles hit head-on. The bus's front was crushed. Passengers were thrown onto the road.

Eleven people died at the scene, including both drivers. Twenty-two injured were taken to hospitals in Nakuru and Molo. Doctors said at least five are in critical condition with head and chest injuries. One nurse said the emergency ward was overwhelmed. "We had to put patients on the floor," she said. Families began arriving by mid-morning to identify bodies.

The Nairobi-Nakuru highway is known for fatal crashes. It is a two-lane road that carries heavy truck traffic and long-distance buses. Overtaking on blind corners is common. Speed limits are rarely enforced. A traffic officer at the scene said the bus was speeding. The truck was overloaded. Skid marks suggest the bus driver tried to swerve at the last second.

Kenya has one of the highest road fatality rates in Africa. The National Transport and Safety Authority said more than 4,000 people die on roads each year. Most accidents involve buses and trucks. Night driving, fatigue, and unroadworthy vehicles are major factors. This bus had no speed governor, according to preliminary inspection, despite legal requirements.

Survivors described chaos. One passenger said he was asleep when he heard a loud bang. He woke up under seats. Another said people were screaming for help while trapped in twisted metal. Local residents were first to respond, using machetes to cut open the bus. Police arrived an hour later. Traffic was backed up for more than five kilometers.

The transport ministry said it will investigate the crash and that the bus company's license has been suspended pending inquiry. The freight company's operations are also under review. The ministry announced a crackdown on night buses on this route, a promise made after previous crashes. Enforcement remains weak.

By noon, the wreckage had been towed to a police yard in Molo. The highway reopened, but oil and blood still stained the asphalt. Relatives continued to search for belongings among the debris. The 22 injured remain in hospital.
