Eviction Turns Violent in Peru: 9 Municipal Workers Burned in Petrol Bomb Attack

HUANCAYO, Peru — A municipal enforcement operation turned catastrophic on October 14, 2026, when nine municipal workers suffered severe first-, second-, and third-degree burns after residents threw flaming petrol onto them from a second-story window. The incident took place in the Salcedo neighborhood of Huancayo, Junín, during an intervention aimed at clearing a structure illegally built over a public roadway.

The confrontation unfolded at Pasaje Las Casuarinas as municipal personnel arrived to execute a planned enforcement and demolition action. Officials reported that property occupants resisted the operation, culminating in a sudden, targeted assault.

The incident occurred at Pasaje Las Casuarinas in the Salcedo neighborhood of Huancayo, Junín, Peru, where occupants hurled igniting gasoline and petrol bombs from a second-floor window directly onto unsuspecting workers gathered below. As a result of the sudden attack, nine municipal employees sustained severe burn injuries across various parts of their bodies.

Bystander footage captured horrific scenes as the flaming liquid rained down, catching several workers off guard and igniting their clothing. Surrounding team members and emergency personnel moved swiftly to extinguish the flames before transporting all nine injured workers to local medical facilities.

Hospital sources confirmed that several victims are currently undergoing intensive treatment for high-degree burns. Local law enforcement authorities have initiated a full criminal investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible for launching the flammable explosive.

In response to the horrific attack, the Mayor of Huancayo and regional civil defense officials strongly condemned the violent resistance, calling it an unprovoked act of criminal violence against civil servants executing lawful duties. Municipal authorities announced that they will provide full medical, financial, and legal support to the injured workers and their families during their recovery. City officials also pledged to review security protocols for future urban enforcement and demolition operations to ensure personnel are adequately protected against unpredictable threats.

Meanwhile, human rights advocates and local labor unions have called for stricter safety measures and specialized protective gear for municipal staff operating in high-risk zones. The violent standoff has sparked widespread public outcry across Junín, with community leaders emphasizing the urgent need for peaceful dialogue and legal resolution in land disputes rather than resorting to life-threatening violence. Local law enforcement has maintained a heightened presence in the Salcedo neighborhood to prevent further unrest as investigations into the attack continue.
