Joondalup Drive Shut Down After Transperth Bus Smashes into Tree

PERTH — A serious public transport accident in Perth’s northern suburbs has triggered a massive multi-agency rescue operation after a Transperth commuter bus veered off the road and slammed into a tree, leaving five passengers injured.

The high-impact collision occurred just after 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, on Joondalup Drive, near the intersection of Drovers Place in Wanneroo.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), Western Australia Police, and St John WA rushed to the site immediately following the crash. Underscoring the perceived severity of the incident, St John WA dispatched eight separate ambulance crews to the location—an unusually high concentration of medical resources for a single traffic collision.

A DFES spokesperson confirmed that despite severe structural damage to the front of the vehicle, no passengers were trapped inside the wreckage.

Emergency services confirmed that a man in his 50s sustained the most severe injuries and was rushed to Joondalup Health Campus under priority "lights and sirens" conditions. Four other passengers—two women in their 40s and 60s, and two men in their 30s and 40s—are also being treated at local facilities for various non-life-threatening injuries.

Road Closure Alert: Main Roads WA has completely closed Joondalup Drive in both directions between Burns Beach Road and Wanneroo Road. Heavy traffic gridlock has quickly built up through Wanneroo, and motorists are being strongly urged to avoid the sector entirely.

The force of the crash left the commuter bus wedged heavily against the tree trunk, with shattered glass and debris scattered across the thoroughfare. Helicopter footage captured a sprawling scene of emergency vehicles completely blocking the local transport network.

WA Police remain on-site to coordinate the cleanup and have launched an official investigation into what caused the Transperth driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance, requesting that anyone with dashcam footage of the area around 11:00 a.m., or any witness information regarding the crash, contact Crime Stoppers immediately.
