To detect major deposits of cobalt, nickel, lithium, and copper, strategic minerals that the United States wants to secure to reduce its dependence on China. KoBold is sparing no expense:
The company has already invested over $31 million in work in Nunavik alone. It uses AI algorithms to analyze massive geological datasets and create ultra-precise “treasure maps,” far faster than traditional methods. Backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures (Gates' fund), Andreessen Horowitz, and other heavyweights, KoBold has raised more than $1 billion in total, with a valuation approaching $3 billion US as of 2025.
Why Quebec? The Canadian Shield is full of promising geological formations, close to existing mines like Raglan (nickel). It's a politically stable, "friendly" zone, and both federal and provincial governments offer incentives to develop these sectors.
