Java Sea Search: Rescuers Recover Seven More Bodies From Capsized Ferry, Death Toll Reaches Twenty-Six

Surabaya, Indonesia—Indonesian search and rescue personnel pulled seven additional bodies from the submerged hull of the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 on Wednesday. The grim discovery pushed the official death toll to twenty-six, nearly two weeks after the vessel flipped during severe weather in the Java Sea. Divers operating in twenty-nine meters of water accessed internal cabins that had remained blocked by shifting cargo.

The vessel was carrying 243 people when it sent its final distress call. Initial rescue operations saved 108 individuals within hours of the disaster. However, more than one hundred passengers and crew members remained unaccounted for as multi-agency teams swept hundreds of square miles of open water. Strong currents and low visibility severely hampered early underwater interventions.

National rescue authorities expanded deployment parameters over the past forty-eight hours, bringing in specialized naval salvage units equipped with thermal underwater drones. Teams located the partially inverted hull drifting roughly 150 kilometers from the destination port of Banjarmasin. Salvage engineers spent days stabilizing the listing frame before divers could safely penetrate enclosed compartments.

"Divers recovered fourteen bodies from inside the ship over the past three days alone," said Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency. "We expect to locate additional victims as the underwater search perimeter widens across the lower deck sections."

Coroner stations in East Java and South Kalimantan prepared temporary holding facilities to process incoming remains. Forensic teams established DNA matching protocols with families camped outside regional disaster response centers. Relatives voiced mounting frustration over the slow pace of casualty identification and official information flow.

Transport ministry investigators impounded shipping logs at the Surabaya departure terminal. Initial inquiries indicate the ship complied with structural weight limits, but meteorological logs confirmed wave heights exceeded three meters when the vessel lost communication. Maritime regulators face sharp questions regarding the issuance of clearance certificates during active storm warnings.

Naval vessels continue patrolling coastal sectors where prevailing winds may have drifted bodies away from the main wreckage site. Cranes and heavy lift barges remain anchored near the site, awaiting authorization to right the hull once underwater extraction sweeps conclude.

Salvage coordinators confirmed that diving operations will continue through the night inside the submerged superstructure.
