KUALA LUMPUR — A heavy downpour triggered widespread flash flooding across several key districts in the federal capital and Ampang, trapping motorists in submerged vehicles and threatening residential homes.
The sudden deluge brought traffic to a standstill as waters quickly rose to nearly a meter deep, turning prominent roadways into rivers and forcing emergency response teams into immediate rescue operations.
The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations center confirmed it received multiple emergency calls as water levels surged across Ampang, Taman U-Thant, and Jalan Ampang. Emergency personnel and rescue engines from the Keramat, Jalan Tun Razak, and Titiwangsa stations were immediately deployed to assist trapped commuters.

On Jalan Mengkudu in Ampang, rescue crews successfully pulled a driver from a vehicle trapped in floodwaters that had reached nearly three feet (0.9 meters) deep. Nearby at Taman U-Thant, rescuers extracted two occupants from a luxury sedan stuck near the Desa Angkasa Condominium after water levels rapidly rose over half a meter high. Additionally, search teams inspected a third submerged vehicle reported near Menara Safuan along Jalan Ampang, though it was ultimately found abandoned with no occupants inside.
"Our priority was securing life safety first in high-risk zones where vehicle engine stalls left drivers vulnerable to rising waters," the department shared in an operational statement. No injuries or casualties were reported during the automotive rescue operations.
The flash floods extended beyond major thoroughfares, directly impacting residential homes in neighboring neighborhoods.
In Ukay Perdana Heights, fire crews responded to reports of a flooded home where trapped residents feared rising water could interact with live home electronics or exposed electrical points. Emergency responders worked alongside utility safety teams to secure power lines and neutralize hazards before safely evacuating the occupants.
While floodwaters began receding later in the evening, authorities have advised motorists to exercise extreme caution when navigating low-lying roads during heavy rainfall. City officials continue to monitor drainage infrastructure throughout the Klang Valley as monsoon-season weather patterns bring localized heavy downpours.
