Islamic State Sahel Province fighters killed at least 48 civilians in Mali’s Menaka region over the weekend, according to four sources. The provisional death toll ranged from 48 to more than 70 and was still being assessed. Attacks struck at least five localities; fighters reportedly burned homes and stole livestock, prompting hundreds to flee to Menaka town. Sources said the violence appeared to retaliate for alleged abuses against suspected informants by pro-government forces, including Russia’s Africa Corps, in the area.
