Irish data centres used almost one billion litres of water last year

An investigation has found that Ireland’s largest data centres used close to one billion litres of water last year. Figures provided to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that at least 999 million litres were used in 2025, with most of that volume attributable to just two campuses: Meta’s site in Clonee and Equinix’s campus in Dublin. Across 2024–2025, data centres connected to public supply used at least 1.7 billion litres in total. The investigation notes that only the biggest campuses are required to report, so totals may be higher.
