Iran-backed Houthi rebels have captured Mayun Island, also known as Perim, at the southern entrance to the Red Sea, according to Yemeni officials. The island sits inside the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital passage linking the Indian Ocean with the Red Sea and Suez Canal. Its capture could allow the Houthis to monitor shipping and threaten Saudi oil exports. The advance has pushed crude prices higher and raised fears of wider disruption to global energy markets and trade and supplies
