Iran: Mocking Over Protest Deaths on TV Sparks Outrage

On February 1, 2026, a mocking segment on Ofogh TV, a channel affiliated with Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, ignited public fury across the nation. The host, Mohammad-Hossein Mohabbati, made insensitive remarks regarding the bodies of protesters killed during the violent crackdown on January 8–9, when thousands were reportedly killed by security forces.

In a sarcastic tone, Mohabbati asked viewers what type of refrigerator the Islamic Republic used to store these bodies, offering multiple-choice answers like "side-by-side fridge" and "ice cream machine." This flippant attitude toward the deaths of the protesters, many of whom were grieving families, drew immediate backlash on social media.

The segment was perceived as a severe lack of empathy from state media, further alienating the populace. Human rights advocates and political commentators criticized the broadcast, accusing it of dehumanizing the deceased and showing a disconnect between the government and the public's grief.

In response to the outrage, the Tehran Prosecutor has charged the director of Ofogh TV and the production team for their roles in the segment. The state broadcaster announced the removal of Sadegh Yazdani, the director of Ofogh TV, labeling the remarks as “disrespectful to the martyrs.”

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions and dissatisfaction with the state media in Iran, which has faced growing skepticism for its reporting. Critics argue that the mocking tone demonstrated by the broadcaster is indicative of an underlying disregard for the sanctity of life, intensifying scrutiny of how the media handles sensitive political issues.

Analysts warn that such insensitive broadcasts could provoke public anger even further, cautioning that officials must take care not to inflame unrest. The political atmosphere in Iran remains volatile, with the situation surrounding state media increasingly under the microscope as people demand accountability and respect for human rights.
