The period immediately after infection appears to be the most critical: the first few weeks bring the highest risk.

But this does not leave us powerless. The research emphasises preventive steps: vaccinations against flu, COVID-19 and other viral illnesses may reduce not only infection risk, but also the downstream heart risks associated with these infections. For those who already have heart disease or risk factors, this new evidence underscores the importance of caution during and after viral illnesses.
