Inferno Near the Border: Massive Fire Devastates Major Food Factories Near Sderot

SDEROT, Israel — A catastrophic industrial fire tore through a major warehouse and factory complex in Sderot's industrial zone on Monday, July 27, 2026, decimating key infrastructure for two of the nation's largest food manufacturers. The massive blaze, which sent towering plumes of thick black smoke visible for miles across the Gaza border area, triggered emergency lockdowns and widespread panic over a suspected hazardous chemical leak.

Up to 25 firefighting squads from multiple districts were rushed to the scene in a desperate, hours-long battle to contain the inferno and protect neighboring industrial facilities.

According to industrial zone sources, the initial fire actually sparked on Sunday afternoon. While emergency crews rushed to the scene and believed they had brought the situation under control, the embers were apparently not fully extinguished. Fanned by changing winds, the fire reignited on Monday morning with vastly greater intensity, rapidly spreading through the Yevulim warehouse complex.

The fast-moving flames quickly swallowed the facilities of two food giants: Strauss and the frozen-food manufacturer Tapugan. Massive stockpiles of goods, including thousands of tons of potatoes and a central Strauss savory snacks warehouse, were entirely incinerated.

"The warehouse was evacuated immediately, and thankfully, there were no serious injuries to our staff," Strauss noted in an official statement, clarifying that the site was primarily a logistics hub and the incident did not disrupt their main manufacturing plants located elsewhere. One civilian and one firefighter were reported lightly hurt during the chaotic initial response.

The crisis escalated dramatically when Israel Fire and Rescue Services detected what was initially identified as an ammonia leak stemming from a facility adjacent to the burning warehouses. Ammonia, heavily utilized in industrial refrigeration systems for food processing, poses severe respiratory risks if released into the atmosphere.

Fearing toxic exposure, authorities instantly ordered a full evacuation of Sderot’s entire industrial zone, forcing hundreds of workers to flee. Concurrently, the Sderot Municipality instructed residents in the nearby "Music Neighborhood" to shelter in place, seal their doors, and close all windows as a protective measure.

Hazardous materials specialists spent hours conducting atmospheric testing at the site. While early alerts sparked high alarm, officials later ruled out a catastrophic chemical breach once the immediate perimeter was secured.

Though a public health crisis was averted, the economic toll on the local food supply logistics is staggering. The loss of thousands of tons of raw produce and processed snack foods is expected to cause localized distribution delays.

Investigating teams are now conducting a thorough review into the exact point of ignition on Sunday afternoon and looking into the operational protocols that allowed the fire to reignite so fiercely less than 24 hours later.
