MANILA, Philippines — A massive fire tore through the densely populated Parola Compound in Delpan, Binondo, Manila, on the afternoon of Saturday, May 23, 2026, leaving thousands of residents displaced.
The blaze broke out shortly after 3:00 p.m., quickly spreading through the closely built homes. Due to the rapid spread of the fire, emergency response levels escalated quickly, eventually reaching Task Force Charlie. Firefighters, assisted by the Philippine Red Cross and calls for aid from the Philippine Air Force, worked tirelessly to contain the flames that engulfed the area.
The fire caused widespread destruction, obliterating 1,266 structures and displacing approximately 7,123 individuals from 2,134 families. While the scale of the property damage is significant, authorities have reported that there were no casualties.
On Sunday, May 24, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso visited the "ground zero" site to inspect the damage and oversee aid distribution. Spearheaded by the Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW), the city government has been providing emergency supplies, including hot meals, drinking water, toiletries, and tents for displaced individuals.
Additionally, the city has deployed trucks and bulldozers to clear debris from alleys and sections of the Pasig River to support recovery efforts. The local government also plans to provide financial assistance to help families rebuild their homes.
"I want that, in today's difficult times, you feel a government you did not have to seek out—the government itself is the one that comes to you," Mayor Domagoso stated during his visit to the site. As of now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
