Inferno in Dimapur: Massive Fire Breaks Out at Bihari Colony

DIMAPUR — A massive fire swept through a densely populated residential cluster in Dimapur on Wednesday afternoon, September 23, 2026 reducing dozens of temporary structures to ashes and rendering approximately 100 families homeless.

The affected locality predominantly inhabited by members of the Bihari community—many of whom work as daily wage earners and auto rickshaw drivers—was quickly engulfed in flames as the blaze tore through bamboo and thatched kutcha homes. Within minutes, thick black smoke billowed across the neighborhood, triggering widespread panic as residents scrambled to rescue their belongings.

Fire officials reported receiving the emergency distress call shortly after 2:00 PM. Due to the lightweight, highly combustible building materials and tight spacing between houses, the fire spread rapidly, leaving occupants with little time to salvage personal belongings or property. Most residents were away at work when the inferno started.

Emergency response teams faced minor delays navigating heavy congestion near local access roads, but fire tenders from multiple stations—including the Central and West Dimapur Fire Stations—arrived to combat the blaze.

"The homes were made of bamboo and light wood, so the fire spread almost instantly. Our priority was surrounding the perimeter to keep it from leaping to nearby commercial blocks and adjacent residential lanes," stated a responding officer from the Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services.

It took firefighters over an hour and a half of intensive effort to bring the flames under control. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that no human casualties or major injuries were reported from the scene.

Preliminary evaluations suspect an electrical short circuit as the probable cause of the fire, a recurring hazard in the area's temporary electrical setups. Local administration officials and community leaders have stepped in to coordinate immediate relief measures, including emergency food distribution and shelter assistance for the displaced families who lost their homes in the disaster.
