Pittsburgh, United States—Six industrial workers suffered severe acute respiratory distress following an accidental airborne chemical leak inside a regional heavy manufacturing processing plant.
A rusted flange on a primary acidic processing line ruptured, releasing a heavy toxic vapor cloud that quickly saturated the enclosed eastern assembly wing.
Automated facility sensors tripped emergency ventilation dampers, but employees trapped near the source inhaled high concentrations of the corrosive aerosol before donning respirators.
Plant safety wardens sounded the general evacuation klaxon, forcing hundreds of workers to assemble in the designated outdoor parking lots upwind from the facility.
"We tasted a sharp metallic burn in the back of our throats, and everyone started coughing violently as the yellow fog rolled across the rafters," recounted assembly technician David Miller.
