Indian refiners purchase Iranian oil, pay in yuan

Indian refiners have recently made purchases of Iranian oil, utilizing a temporary waiver from US sanctions that allows transactions within a month. This strategy is employed as Iranian authorities now insist on payments in Chinese yuan to circumvent financial restrictions imposed by the US. Major Indian companies like Indian Oil and Reliance Industries have opted for this payment method, diverging from their previous reliance on the US dollar. In fact, India has used rupees and UAE dirhams for oil payments in the past, and reports indicate that some Russian crude was also bought in yuan amid Western sanctions.

Payments for the Iranian oil were channeled through ICICI Bank's branch in Shanghai, as other banking institutions lacked a presence in China at this time. Officials from the refiners and the bank could not be reached for comments. Sujata Sharma, a joint secretary in the petroleum ministry, mentioned that oil marketing companies are diligently working to secure adequate cargo to meet domestic demand, all while adhering to government regulations.

The Trump administration's waiver on US sanctions, which permits purchasing Iranian and Russian oil already in transit, aims to alleviate rising oil prices linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. More shipments from Iran are anticipated before the waiver expires on Sunday, creating a critical window for Indian refineries to enhance their crude supply.

As the dynamics between Iran and western nations shift, the use of yuan for oil transactions symbolizes an evolving landscape in international trade and finance.
