Fiber’s rise hasn’t come from celebrity endorsements alone, but from a fresh wave of curiosity about digestion, metabolic health and overall well-being. On social media platforms such as TikTok a trend dubbed “fibermaxxing” has gained traction — urging people to consciously increase their intake of fiber-rich foods such as legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. This movement dovetails with broader concerns about gut health, which many younger consumers now link not just to digestive comfort, but to clearer skin, improved mood and even mood and cognitive function.

The science behind fiber’s appeal lies in its impact on the body’s internal ecosystem. Dietary fiber, unlike digestible carbohydrates, travels through the digestive tract largely intact — adding bulk that promotes regular bowel movements and feeding beneficial gut bacteria that support a balanced microbiome. These microscopic communities influence processes from inflammation to immune response, and research suggests diets rich in fiber are associated with lower risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.

Industry leaders have taken note. During recent earnings calls and public remarks, executives from PepsiCo and McDonald’s highlighted fiber as a rising nutritional priority, with PepsiCo’s CEO even predicting that “fiber will be the next protein.” Meanwhile, grocery forecasts indicate more “fiber-forward” product labeling and new fiber-enhanced foods hitting store shelves.

Part of fiber’s appeal comes from what it replaces in typical diets. In many Western patterns, refined carbohydrates and highly processed foods dominate, leaving fiber intake far below recommended levels — the U.S. government notes that a large majority of adults fall short of daily targets. In contrast, fiber-rich foods tend to be whole, plant-based and nutrient dense.

Yet experts caution that the emerging trend isn’t about abandoning protein — which remains essential for tissue repair, muscle maintenance and metabolic health — but embracing a more balanced view of macronutrients. Fiber complements protein’s benefits by supporting digestion, stabilizing blood sugar and promoting satiety in ways that can make overall nutrition both more satisfying and more health-affirming.

In this shift, what was once considered a minor nutrient is becoming central to the next chapter of health consciousness — not as a passing fad, but as a reflection of deeper questions about how food functions in the body, and how everyday choices can influence long-term well-being.
