In northern Europe, the cold air for most of the year has taken on new value in the era of artificial intelligence. As computing needs rise and data centers require massive energy to run thousands of servers, Finland is slowly becoming one of the attractive spots for global tech companies.

Google announced an investment of around €13 billion or $15.1 billion in Finland over the next two years. This investment will be used to build three new data centers in the northern region of the country and will be Google's largest investment in Europe to date.

Finland's location has one significant natural advantage for data centers: a cold climate. Low temperatures assist in cooling servers that operate continuously. With the increasing demand for AI computing, cooling efficiency has become an essential part of digital infrastructure planning.

Google has also signed a 22-year agreement to purchase up to 50% of energy from one of Fortum's nuclear power plants. This agreement marks Google's first nuclear energy contract outside the United States.

Tech companies now require not just chips and software. They need vast amounts of electricity, stable networks, and locations capable of supporting long-term data center construction. Therefore, energy and technology are becoming increasingly intertwined in the global investment landscape.

Google's project is expected to contribute about €3.6 billion to Finland's gross domestic product during the construction phase in 2027–2028. Once the project is operational, the investment is expected to support around 7,000 jobs each year.

Google will also collaborate with Fortum to explore nuclear energy projects and other renewable energy sources. At the same time, the construction of data centers is projected to drive improvements in the electrical grid and energy storage in the region.

Behind all these figures lies a significant shift in how the world builds technology. AI is no longer just within user-visible applications. It requires buildings, electricity, networks, cooling, and extensive physical infrastructure. Finland is now one of the places where the digital layer meets the physical world.
