China's Exports Soar: AI and Chip Technology Become the New Engines of Global Trade

Chinese ports are once again showcasing how global trade is moving. Containers come and go, while increasingly complex technology products occupy a larger space in export flows. In August, China's trade figures indicated that global demand for technology products remains one of the crucial pillars of its economy.

China's exports surged 25% year-on-year in August 2026. Imports also increased by 28.2%, while the trade surplus reached approximately US$119.09 billion.

One of the main drivers comes from high-tech and AI products. The value of China's high-tech exports increased by 42.9%, while exports of semiconductors and vehicles also saw a rise. These figures indicate that China's trade structure is becoming stronger in sectors that require technology and value-added manufacturing.

The growth in exports is significant as domestic demand in China still faces several pressures. Consumption has not fully recovered, and a weak property sector keeps the external sector as one of the closely watched sources of growth.

However, the 28.2% increase in imports also presents another picture. As industrial and trade activities rise, the demand for raw materials, components, and various supporting products also grows. Thus, trade flows are not only about goods leaving the country but also about production machinery continuously moving within the domestic market.

China is also increasingly seen as one of the world's technology production hubs. Semiconductors, vehicles, and AI-based products are part of this expansion. For the global market, this development means that more economic sectors are connected to China's manufacturing capacity.

The trade surplus of over US$119 billion in August further strengthens the position of the export sector as an economic buffer. If this trend continues, China's annual surplus could potentially exceed US$1 trillion.

Behind these numbers lies a gradual change in the face of global trade. Technology products are now moving alongside conventional goods in ships and trains leaving China's industrial zones. From chip factories to vehicles, these flows demonstrate that technology has become an essential part of global trade.
