Valencia, Spain— A house fire that broke out shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday in the Benimaclet suburb killed an 82-year-old man and gutted a single-story home after an electrical fault sparked flames in a back bedroom.
Neighbors smelled smoke and called 112 when they saw flames through shuttered windows. Fire crews arrived in seven minutes to find the house fully involved, with fire venting from the roof. The elderly resident lived alone and was unable to escape.
Firefighters forced entry and found the man in the hallway near the front door. Paramedics attempted resuscitation but declared him dead at the scene from smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. Two adjacent houses suffered smoke damage.
"The panel was old, wires exposed. The bedroom outlet melted first, then the curtain caught," a Bomberos commander said at the scene, citing preliminary burn patterns. He said the home had no working smoke detector.
Family members said the victim had lived in the house for 40 years and had reported flickering lights last week. An electrician had been scheduled to visit Wednesday.
Valencia city officials said the neighborhood was built in the 1960s with original aluminum wiring still in many homes. A municipal campaign offers free inspections for residents over 75, but uptake remains low.
"The fault likely started in a junction box behind a wardrobe. Overloaded extension leads fed a heater. That is a pattern we see in older homes," a forensic electrical investigator said. He spoke on condition of anonymity pending a formal report.
Neighbors gathered in the street as crews pulled charred furniture onto the sidewalk. The city provided emergency housing for a daughter who arrived from Castellón.
Spain records more than 15,000 residential fires per year, many linked to outdated installations. Consumer groups have urged mandatory checks for homes over 30 years old.
The judicial police sealed the house and will hand a technical report to the investigating court within 48 hours to rule out any other cause.
