Kyoto, Japan— A wooden two-story house in the Sakyo Ward caught fire at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, killing two elderly residents inside and gutting the home before firefighters could bring flames under control.
Neighbors reported smelling smoke and hearing a smoke alarm, then saw flames from the ground floor kitchen. Fire crews arrived in six minutes to find the house fully involved, with fire spreading to a neighboring shed.
Firefighters found two victims, an 84-year-old man and his 81-year-old wife, in a second-floor bedroom near a window. Both were pronounced dead at the scene from smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
"They lived there 50 years. The husband used a kerosene heater in winter. I saw flames from kitchen window first," said a neighbor who called 119 and tried to enter but was driven back by smoke.
Kyoto Fire Department deployed five engines and contained the blaze by 5:40 a.m. The house, built in 1972 with traditional wooden framing, collapsed partially. Two adjacent homes suffered exterior scorching.
Preliminary investigation points to a portable kerosene heater left near bedding or curtains. The heater was found melted in the kitchen area. The home had a smoke detector, but its battery was dead, according to fire officials.
"Elderly victims often cannot escape quickly. Heaters and old wiring are common ignition sources in this season," a Kyoto fire investigator said at the scene.
Kyoto City has run campaigns offering free smoke detector checks for elderly households, but many older homes still lack interconnected alarms.
The couple’s son arrived from Osaka later in the morning and was assisted by victim support officers. The ward office will provide temporary housing assistance for neighboring families whose homes were damaged.
The fire department will hand a report to police within 48 hours to rule out any other cause.
The city will hold a fire prevention briefing for elderly residents in the ward this week.
