Auckland, New Zealand— A home invasion and violent assault at 9:15 p.m. on October 30, 2026 in the suburb of Papatoetoe left two residents hospitalized and a quiet street sealed off by armed police.
Three men forced entry through a rear ranch slider at a single-story home on Kolmar Road. Inside were a couple in their 60s and their adult son. Police said the intruders demanded cash and car keys, then assaulted the father and son when they resisted.
The father suffered head injuries and a broken arm. The son suffered facial fractures. The mother was restrained and threatened but not physically injured. The intruders fled with a small amount of cash, electronics, and the family’s SUV, which was later found abandoned two streets away.
“It was loud. Dogs barking, then shouting,” said neighbor Leanne Cooper, who called 111. “We have never had anything like this here. This street is usually silent at night.”
The New Zealand Herald reported police deployed the Armed Offenders Squad after reports the men carried a firearm and a hammer. Officers cordoned off five houses and used dogs to track through backyards. No arrests were made at the scene.
Papatoetoe has seen a rise in aggravated burglaries this year, many linked to youth groups targeting homes for vehicles. Police said this crew appears older and more organized. They wore face coverings and gloves and disabled a security camera at the front door before entry.
“We believe this was targeted, not random, based on the vehicle and the entry method,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Hayward. “We are reviewing CCTV from the entire subdivision and asking anyone who saw a dark SUV speeding around 9:20 p.m. to contact us.”
Victim support officers remained with the family overnight. The subdivision’s community Facebook page filled with warnings and footage of police lights.
Tonight the house remains under guard as forensic teams work inside. The injured are stable at Middlemore Hospital. The search for the three intruders continues.
