Fatal Stabbing Outside Brisbane Transit Station Shocks Commuters, Victim Dies, Police Arrest Suspect Quickly

Brisbane, Australia— A fatal stabbing outside a public transit station in Brisbane at 4:12 p.m. on October 30, 2026 killed a 27-year-old man and left a second man injured, shutting down bus and train connections during peak hour.

The attack happened at the entrance to Roma Street Transit Centre, where long-distance buses and city trains meet. Police said two groups argued near a coffee kiosk on Platform 10. One man pulled a knife and stabbed two others before running toward Roma Street.

The 27-year-old died at the scene despite CPR from transit officers. The second victim, 24, was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening wounds. Both were known to each other, police said, and the attack appears targeted, not random.

“We were waiting for the 4:15 to the Gold Coast. Then shouting, then blood,” said commuter Priya Nair, who witnessed the stabbing. “People pulled kids away. Staff locked the doors to the platform.”

ABC News Australia reported police arrested a 22-year-old man within 18 minutes near the Brisbane Magistrates Court, about 400 meters from the station. A knife believed to be the weapon was recovered from a storm drain. The suspect was taken to Brisbane City Watchhouse for questioning.

Queensland Police sealed the transit centre’s western entrance and set up a crime scene extending 100 meters. Forensic officers swabbed blood from the tiles and collected CCTV from Queensland Rail and private shops. Buses were diverted to King George Square. Trains resumed on a single track after an hour.

Roma Street has seen an increase in violent incidents this year as homeless encampments and drug use overlap with commuter traffic. The state government said it added 20 transit officers in September, but unions said coverage remains thin after 6 p.m.

“We have a suspect in custody and we are not looking for others at this time,” said Detective Inspector Craig White. “We believe this was an altercation between people known to each other that escalated tragically.”

Tonight the station has reopened with a police guard at the entrance. The deceased’s family has been notified. The suspect has not yet been charged as detectives continue witness interviews.
