Historic Verdict in Damascus: Ousted President Bashar al-Assad and Atef Najib Sentenced to Death

DAMASCUS, SYRIA — In a landmark moment for transitional justice, a Syrian court in Damascus on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 sentenced ousted President Bashar al-Assad and his former Political Security chief Atef Najib to death for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during Syria’s 14-year conflict.

The ruling marks the conclusion of Case No. 1 of 2026, the first major prosecution targeting top officials of the former regime. Assad was sentenced in absentia along with his brother, Maher al-Assad, following their flight to Russia.

Unlike the absent former president, Atef Najib—Assad’s maternal cousin and former head of Political Security in Daraa—stood inside a metal defendant's cage in a prisoner’s uniform as the sentence was delivered.

Following the collapse of the regime, Najib was arrested in early 2025 and subsequently became the highest-ranking former official to face trial in person.
