GQEBERHA, EASTERN CAPE — A devastating head-on collision between two vehicles on the N2 near Colchester outside Gqeberha has claimed the lives of three people.
The incident occurred when two passenger vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided violently along the busy highway stretch towards Makhanda.
According to reports from the Eastern Cape Transport Department, one of the vehicles—driven by a lone male driver—was traveling towards Makhanda when it collided head-on with a second vehicle carrying two occupants.
The sheer force of the high-speed impact left both vehicles severely damaged, blocking sections of the highway as wreckage scattered across the roadway. Emergency personnel, including paramedics and traffic officers, rushed to the scene shortly after the crash was reported.
Despite the swift response of first responders, all three occupants involved in the crash sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose confirmed the fatalities and stated that authorities are actively looking into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
South African Police Service (SAPS) officers have formally opened a case of culpable homicide to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether speeding, poor visibility, or illegal overtaking contributed to the tragic head-on impact.
Local traffic authorities have urged motorists traveling along the N2 stretch between Gqeberha and Makhanda to exercise extreme caution, maintain safe following distances, and adhere to speed limits to prevent further road fatalities.
The N2 corridor connecting Gqeberha and Makhanda has long been flagged by provincial traffic officials as a high-risk area due to heavy freight transport, dense morning fog, and frequent high-speed overtaking maneuvers. In response to this recent tragedy, provincial safety groups are renewing calls for increased highway patrol's and stricter enforcement of speed limits along dangerous stretches of the route.
Meanwhile, local authorities are working to notify the next of kin before releasing the identities of the deceased. Grief counselors and victim support units have been dispatched to assist the affected families as the Eastern Cape community mourns another devastating loss on its roads.
