Heavy Monsoon Floods Paralyze Bangkok, Fifty Thousand Homes Hit, Streets Turn Into Rivers Overnight

Bangkok, Thailand— Heavy monsoon downpours caused urban floods in Bangkok on October 31, 2026, leaving more than 50,000 households affected and large parts of the capital under water.

Rain started at 2 a.m. and did not stop. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said some stations recorded over 180 millimeters by 9 a.m. Drains backed up. Khlongs overflowed. By morning rush hour, major roads in Lat Phrao, Bang Kapi and Din Daeng were impassable. Cars floated.

The BMA said 50,000 households were affected across 20 districts. That number came from flood complaints and power cut reports. In some sois, water was waist-high. Residents waded out carrying children and plastic bags of documents. Motorbike drivers pushed their bikes through brown water.

Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said pumps were running at full capacity but could not keep up. He said Bangkok’s drainage was built for 60 millimeters per hour. The storm delivered triple that. Low-lying districts like Bang Khen were hit first. Water had nowhere to go.

Public transport buckled. The MRT Blue Line saw delays due to water in stations. Buses were rerouted. Office workers were told to work from home, but many were already stuck. A nurse said she walked two hours to reach Siriraj Hospital because no taxi would take her.

Shops closed. In Chatuchak market, vendors stood on tables as water rose around stalls. In Sam Yan, a convenience store’s refrigerators shorted and caught fire. No injuries were reported there. Power was cut in several blocks as a precaution.

The Meteorological Department said the downpour was driven by a strong monsoon trough sitting over central Thailand. It said more rain was expected tonight. It warned of flash floods in the north and northeast as well. Bangkok was told to brace for high tide, which would block river discharge.

Critics pointed to poor maintenance. Drains clogged with plastic and construction debris. New condos paved over retention ponds. A city engineer said they had warned about this for years. The city grows fast, the drains do not.

By evening, water was receding in some central areas but rising in the east. The BMA said shelters were open in four districts. Relief teams handed out sandbags. People queued for them in the rain.
