PORTLAND, Ore. — What was meant to be a celebratory final day of service ended in tragedy when K-9 Kylo, a six-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau, was fatally shot during an officer-involved shooting while confronting a violent offender.
The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon when multi-agency task force officers located a wanted suspect at a hotel in Southeast Portland. As law enforcement moved in to apprehend the individual, gunfire erupted. Kylo was deployed to assist officers during the high-stakes encounter, but sustained severe gunshot wounds as shots were exchanged. Officers rushed the German Shepherd to an emergency veterinary hospital, where medical staff worked tirelessly to save his life. Despite their efforts, Kylo succumbed to his injuries. The suspect also died at the scene.
Kylo had served alongside his handler since 2020 after completing training as a specialized tracking and apprehension dog. Known around the precinct for his high energy and unwavering loyalty, Kylo was scheduled to officially retire at the end of his shift. His retirement plans included joining his handler's family full-time as a companion.
"Kylo was a beloved member of our bureau and a true protector of the peace," police spokesperson Mike Benner said during a press conference. "Our K-9s are family to us, and losing a partner in the line of duty leaves a devastating void across the entire department."
On Thursday evening, dozens of patrol vehicles with flashing lights led a formal procession to honor Kylo as his body was escorted to the Oregon Humane Society. Community members and fellow law enforcement agencies across the region have expressed a wave of condolences, leaving flowers and messages outside the precinct to honor the fallen hero's sacrifice.
In response to the tragedy, local community leaders and police advocacy groups have announced plans to establish a memorial fund in Kylo's name to support regional K-9 units with advanced protective gear and post-service veterinary care.
An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and the officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave.
