The Story Bridge rests, and Brisbane must find another way

Bridges are patient things. They bear their loads without complaint, carrying thousands of journeys every day, asking nothing in return but the occasional glance of appreciation. But even the most steadfast structures need tending, and Brisbane's Story Bridge—a landmark that has watched over the river since the 1930s—is about to receive some long-overdue care. For three weeks over the New Year period, this steel and concrete elder will fall silent, and the city will have to find its way around .

The closure is scheduled from December 27, 2026, to January 18, 2027. The work involves resurfacing the southern approach and parts of the northern approach, along with structural deck maintenance and waterproofing. Brisbane City Council's Ryan Murphy acknowledged what many drivers have already sensed: the approaches have grown a little bumpy, and the summer months offer the best window for repairs .

This maintenance is part of a larger undertaking. The council has allocated $110 million under a program called Operation Smooth, a name that suggests not just physical smoothing but perhaps a smoothing of the anxiety that comes with aging infrastructure. Murphy described the work as "hot, sweaty and arduous," yet necessary—a phrase that could describe much of what it takes to preserve anything worth keeping .

The timing is deliberate. Late December and early January are when many Brisbane residents travel elsewhere for the summer holidays, leaving the city's roads quieter than usual. Those who remain will need to find alternatives: the Captain Cook Bridge, the Go Between Bridge, the Clem7 tunnel, the Gateway Bridge, and the William Jolly Bridge are all available. It is a detour, to be sure, but not an impossible one .

What makes this moment more than routine maintenance is the larger conversation swirling around the Story Bridge's future. The 85-year-old structure was built for traffic volumes far smaller than what it carries today—fewer than 10,000 trips daily in the 1940s, compared to roughly 100,000 now. An independent committee has warned that without a full restoration, the bridge will be unable to carry traffic within twenty years, and the cost would be "beyond council" .

The committee has floated several possibilities for funding: a toll similar to the one on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, contributions from all levels of government, an annual rates levy, or corporate sponsorship. The council has said a toll or levy would be considered only as a last resort. For now, these remain proposals rather than decisions, but they hover in the background like clouds on a distant horizon .

For three weeks, the Story Bridge will be quiet. No trucks rumbling across its deck, no commuters watching the river slide beneath them. It will simply rest, while workers resurface and repair, ensuring that when it reopens, it can continue doing what it has always done—connecting one side of the city to the other, day after day, without complaint.
